There are many heritage lists (e.g. World Heritage, state heritage, local government, National Trust and Indigenous community heritage lists), with varying criteria and laws and regulations to protect heritage places. The Register of the National Estate, compiled by the Australian Heritage Commission, is a nation-wide heritage list that encompasses natural, Indigenous and historic places.

At 18 June 2003, the Hobart local government area had the highest number of places listed on the Register of the National Estate of any local government area in the state (279 of which 275 were historic listings). Northern Midlands followed with 247 listings, of which 233 were historic.

Circular Head and Central Highlands had the highest number of Indigenous heritage listings in Tasmania (each with 11). West Coast had the highest number of natural listings (28), followed by Finders (27), and Central Highlands and Huon Valley (each with 24).
