Community Profiles - more detailed and comprehensive data
A bigger picture of the 1996 Census of Population and Housing is now available with the release of the last Community Profiles. They are: Expanded Community Profile, Usual Residents Profile, Working Population Profile and Indigenous Profile.
The Profiles can be accessed in a variety of formats (see the "Understanding your Community" article on Community Profiles) and are available either as a CDATA96 Add-On Datapak or through the ABS Consultancy Service. They are designed to meet individual needs and to enable comparisons to be made between different areas on a number of social, economic and demographic variables.
Usual Residents Profile
The Usual Residents Profile provides an insight into who usually lives in an area, rather than who was in the area on Census night. For example, people may have been on holidays in the snowfields on Census night, 6 August 1996, and this is where they would have been counted. This profile will be invaluable for a range of organisations such as shopping centres, libraries, hospitals or government authorities, as it focuses on the resident population that they service.
Usual Residents data is essential for people wanting to analyse the usual make up of an area, and may be accessed for a variety of geographic levels including: Statistical Local Area, Local Government Area, Statistical Division, Postal Area, State and Australia.

Expanded Community Profile
The Expanded Community Profile helps to enhance your knowledge of census data by providing greater classificatory detail than is available in the Basic Community Profile. One example of this is "occupation": in the Basic Community Profile there are 11 occupation categories, however the Expanded Community Profile provides 116 occupation categories.
The Expanded Community Profile contains 41 tables comprising more detailed variants of the Basic Community Profile tables as well as some new tables, and provides data from Statistical Local Area up to Australia.

Working Population Profile
The Working Population Profile details information on labour force and related characteristics of employed people based on their workplace address as opposed to where they live.
It has been developed for those analysts who require an industry profile of occupations, hours worked and method of travel to work for those Statistical Local Areas within the Journey to Work study areas. For example, if an organisation was looking at opening a new shop in the Central Business District, part of their research would be to find out more about the working population that would be considered potential customers. Data is available for Statistical Local Areas within the journey to work study areas (see Fact Sheet 2: 1996 Census of Population and Housing: Number of 1996 Census Geographic Areas for information on Journey To Work Study Areas).

Indigenous Profile
The Indigenous Profile contains 26 tables of data from the 1996 Census specific to the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.
Included in the Indigenous Profile is a breakdown of the Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander population by sex, as well as education by variables such as age left school, highest qualification (field and level), and language proficiency.
Labour Force tables cover industry sector, occupation, hours worked and some data collected for the first time in the 1996 Census regarding the Community Development Employment Projects Scheme.
The remaining tables present data relating to individual, family and household income, structure of dwellings and tenure type, housing loan repayments and weekly rent.
Profiles are provided in electronic format, on disk or in hard copy, or as an Add-On Datapak in accordance with the client's requirements. Customised tables are available on request.
