BIRTHS
There were 86,800 births registered in NSW during 2000, 35% of all births registered in Australia. NSW experienced a fertility rate of 1.81 babies per woman compared to the national rate of 1.75. Only the Northern Territory had a higher rate at 2.22. Generally, capital cities had a lower fertility rate than the balances of the States/Territories.
