The late 1950s to the early 1960s in Tasmania was a period of peak fertility culminating in a record 8,892 babies registered in 1961. Since that time, there has generally been a decrease in the number of births registered in Tasmania, with recent variability. In 2005, Tasmania recorded 6,308 births, an increase of 499 on the 2004 figure of 5,809.
