RECENT RELEASE: PERSONAL FRAUD, AUSTRALIA, 2010-2011
Released: 25th May 2012, cat. no. 4528.0
The second national survey of personal fraud was conducted throughout Australia from July 2010 to June 2011, with the results published in Personal Fraud, 2010-11 (cat. no. 4528.0).The survey asked respondents aged 15 years and over about their experiences of selected personal fraud offences in the 12 months prior to interview, including credit/bank card fraud, identity theft, and a selected range of scams. Detailed characteristics of the victims and incidents of each fraud type were also collected, such as whether they reported the incident to an authority and whether they incurred a financial loss.
Results from the survey revealed that an estimated 1.2 million Australians, or 6.7% of the population aged 15 years and over, were a victim of at least one incident of personal fraud in the 12 months prior to interview. This was an increase from when the survey was last run in 2007, where there were an estimated 806,000 victims (5.0%) of personal fraud. An estimated 662,300 Australians, or 3.7% of the population aged 15 years and over were victims of credit card fraud in the 12 months prior to interview. This is an increase from the 383,300 victims of credit card fraud in 2007 (2.4%). The survey results also estimated that three in five victims of personal fraud (713,600 persons) lost money, an average of $2,000 per victim. This resulted in a total loss of approximately $1.4 billion by Australians due to personal fraud in 2010-11.
