Barley is the second largest broadacre crop in terms of area in Tasmania (in recent years, area of poppies has overtaken barley). Barley is grown mainly in northern areas, around the Northern Midlands and Meander Valley municipalities.

In 1999-2000, reduced plantings and lower than average yields, due to poor seasonal conditions, resulted in a 27% fall in production, to 22,000 tonnes.

Preliminary estimates for 2000-01 show an increase in production to 26,000 tonnes.
