Tasmania is not a significant wheat producer, although in recent years area sown and production have increased. Wheat is grown mainly in northern areas of Tasmania. Although barley has had larger area and production figures in recent years, wheat has achieved a much better yield.

In 1999-2000, increased plantings countered lower than average yields and poor seasonal conditions, resulting in an 11% rise in production, to 20,000 tonnes.

Preliminary estimates for 2000-01 show an increase in production to 25,000 tonnes.
