Apples are, by far, still the most significant fruit crop in Tasmania. In 1999-2000, Tasmanian farmers produced 58,000 tonnes of apples, third behind Victoria (98,000 tonnes) and New South Wales (67,000 tonnes).

The five most common varieties of apples grown in Tasmania were:

  • Red delicious (25,000 tonnes)
  • Golden delicious (7,000 tonnes)
  • Fuji (6,000 tonnes)
  • Jonagold (3,000 tonnes)
  • Democrat (3,000 tonnes)

In 1999-2000, just under three-quarters of all apples produced came from the Huon Valley municipality. Growers there produced 43,000 tonnes of apples, which were more than that grown in either Western Australia (41,000 tonnes), Queensland (33,000 tonnes) or South Australia (23,000 tonnes).
