There are two main mineral processing plants in the Northern Region of Tasmania, those operated by Comalco Aluminium Limited and Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company (TEMCO).
- The Comalco Aluminium Limited plant is at Bell Bay, near George Town. At the Comalco smelter, alumina produced from bauxite in Queensland is converted to aluminium to produce such products as the aluminium powder used in explosives and in metallic paints. For further information on production, employment and capital expenditure, see Comlaco Aluminium (Bell Bay) Limited on this web site (under Statistics - Tasmania).
- The Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company (TEMCO) plant is also at Bell Bay. At the TEMCO smelter, ferro- and silico-manganese alloys are produced by using manganese ore, iron ore and coal from mainland Australia and mixing them with local quartzite and limestone. For further information on production, employment and capital expenditure, see Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company (TEMCO) on this web site (under Statistics - Tasmania).
