Youth Allowance, which was introduced by the Commonwealth Government in July 1998, is a payment for young Australians who are either:
- temporarily incapacitated.
At 1 June 2001, Hobart local government area recorded a rate of 37.3 Youth Allowance recipients per 1,000 persons, the highest in the state. King Island recorded the lowest rate in the state, 13.9 recipients per 1,000 persons.
