During 2001-02, there were 3,869 residential aged care places in Tasmania. Of these, 3,781 were occupied by residents, with nearly three quarters of these residents being females (source: Department of Health and Ageing). Nearly half of residential aged care places were located in the Greater Hobart-Southern Region.
The Community Aged Care Program supports people who are eligible for residential care but have a preference to stay at home. In 2001-02, there were 696 Tasmanians receiving this support.
