The Australian Culture and Leisure Classifications (ACLC) are part of the commitment of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to develop national standards for culture and leisure information. They comprise three separate classifications covering culture and leisure related industries, products and occupations and have been produced by the National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics (NCCRS), a centre within the ABS.
This is the third edition of the ACLC, with the first edition developed in 2001 and the second in 2008. The third edition is the result of a minor review undertaken to update concordances between the ACLC and the standard ABS classifications for industries and occupations. The ACLC Industry Classification has been reviewed to reflect updates made to the 2006 Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) which were released in 2012 and 2013. Similarly, the ACLC Occupation Classification now reflects updates made to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) in 2009 and 2013.
The most significant change in this edition of the ACLC has been the adoption of a new Product Classification. In previous editions of the ACLC, the Product Classification aligned broadly with the Australian and New Zealand Standard Product Classification (ANZSPC). However, the ABS has decommissioned ANZSPC as the Australian statistical standard for products, and adopted the international Central Product Classification (Version 2.0) as the overarching framework for product classifications.
The ACLC are intended to form the basis for future statistical compilation in the fields of culture and leisure by the ABS and by other organisations.
The production of this third edition was made possible with the financial support of the Cultural Ministers’ Statistics Working Group and the Committee of Australian Sport and Recreation Officials.
