    Cat. No.:
        Printed Publication and Electronic

The three volumes of Statistical Geography provide information about the names and codes of the geographic areas used in the 1996 Census.

Statistical Geography: Volume 1 - Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC), 1996 Census Edition

Volume 1 provides information about the ASGC and changes to geographic areas between each census.

It contains an explanation of the hierarchical relationship between the geographic areas covered by the ASGC.

The following geographic areas are covered in this publication:

      Collection District
      Statistical Local Area
      Local Government Area
      Statistical Subdivision
      Statistical Division
      Statistical District
      Statistical Region Sector
      Statistical Region
      Major Statistical Region
      Section of State

Statistical Geography: Volume 2 - Census Geographic Areas, Australia

Volume 2 provides information on standard census output areas not covered by the ASGC.

Many of the areas described in this volume are derived by aggregating the Collection Districts (CDs) that best fit the original area. These CD-derived areas do not necessarily match exactly with the original area. An example of this is CD-derived Commonwealth Electoral Divisions. These areas are constructed using the CDs that best match the electorates defined by the Australian Electoral Commission.

The areas covered by this volume are:
  • Postal Area ;
  • Commonwealth Electoral Division;
  • State Electoral Division;
  • Suburb (where applicable);
  • Journey to Work Study Area;
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission Region;
  • Indigenous Location (approximately 80+ Indigenous persons); and
  • Indigenous Area (approximately 280+ Indigenous persons)

Statistical Geography: Volume 3 - Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) Urban Centres/Localities, 1996 Census Edition

Volume 3 provides information on the Urban Centres and Localities (UC/Ls) that are defined in accordance with the ASGC, using the person counts collected in the census.
