STAGE OF PRODUCTION COMMENTARY

In the March quarter 2015, the Final demand index rose 0.5%, the Intermediate demand index fell 0.3% and the Preliminary demand index fell 0.8%. Through the year to the March quarter 2015, the Final demand index rose 0.7%, the Intermediate demand index fell 1.0% and the Preliminary demand index fell 2.3%.

The rise of 0.5% in the Final demand index in the March quarter 2015 reflected a rise of 0.2% in the prices of domestically produced products and a rise of 2.8% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices for building construction (+0.8%) and other agricultural products (+10.7%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-13.9%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (+8.9%), other transport equipment manufacturing (+11.3%) and motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts manufacturing (+2.6%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-22.1%), and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-29.2%).

The fall of 0.3% in the Intermediate demand index in the March quarter 2015 reflected a fall of 0.2% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 0.7% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded falls in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-16.8%) and oil and gas extraction (-19.7%). Offsetting these falls were rises in grain, sheep, beef and dairy farming (+6.1%), other agricultural products (+5.9%) and coal mining (+8.6%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices for oil and gas extraction (-25.3%), petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-18.6%) and pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-22.6%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+6.2%), computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (+7.6%) and polymer product manufacturing (+4.5%).

The fall of 0.8% in the Preliminary demand index in the March quarter 2015 reflected a fall of 0.4% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 3.1% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded falls in the prices for oil and gas extraction (-19.7%), petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-17.1%), and basic polymer manufacturing (-10.9%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for grain, sheep, beef and dairy farming (+5.8%) and coal mining (+8.6%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices for oil and gas extraction (-25.2%) and petroleum refining, petroleum fuel manufacturing (-21.3%) and metal ore mining (-3.9%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (+8.1%), textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+6.3%) and polymer product manufacturing (+6.0%).
