Change to Australia's economic territory

A new Maritime Boundary Treaty between Australia and Timor-Leste came in to force on 30 August 2019. The new treaty provides exclusive jurisdiction of the former Joint Petroleum Development Area excluding Greater Sunrise in the Timor Sea to Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. From this publication onwards, data contained within International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia (cat.no.5368.0) will reflect the new maritime boundary.

Update to country labels:

The Standard Australian Classification of Countries (SACC) reflect country titles recognised by the Australian Government. Currently, ABS International Trade statistical outputs are being updated to correspond with the SACC (e.g. all references to The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia will be updated to North Macedonia). The identification of countries and country groups within the SACC does not imply the expression of any opinion on the part of the ABS regarding the legal status of any country, territory, or area, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries.

These changes will be made iteratively across all ABS International Trade publications including:

  • 5368.0.55.003 – International Trade: Supplementary Information, Financial Year 2018-19 reference (available from November 21, 2019;
  • 5368.0 – International Trade in Goods and Services, October 2019 reference (available December 5, 2019); and,
  • 5489.0 – International Merchandise Trade, Australia: Concepts, Sources and Methods, date to be advised.
