SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during September 2017 (752,500 movements) increased 0.4% when compared with August 2017 (749,700 movements). Currently, short-term visitor arrivals are 6.7% higher than in September 2016.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during September 2017. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for September 2016 and September 2017 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for Hong Kong (19.5%), followed by China (19.4%), and India (18.6%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for the United Kingdom (-5.3%) and New Zealand (-0.7%).

SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS

In trend terms, short-term resident returns to Australia during September 2017 (884,700 movements) increased 0.2% when compared with August 2017 (882,900 movements). Currently, short-term resident returns are 5.5% higher than in September 2016.

The following table presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in September 2017. When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for September 2016 and September 2017 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for China (17.4%), followed by Japan (11.7%), and Italy (11.4%).The highest percentage decreases were recorded for Singapore and Fiji ( both -3.3%) and Indonesia (-3.2%).
