JUNE KEY POINTS
ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
- In original terms, the June 2011 merchandise imports were $18,413m, an increase of $372m (2%) on the revised May 2011 merchandise imports of $18,041m.
PRELIMINARY BALANCE OF PAYMENTS GOODS IMPORTS
- Preliminary analysis shows that goods debits (imports) on a balance of payments basis in original terms rose $826m (5%) between May and June 2011. In seasonally adjusted terms goods debits rose $605m (3%) from $18,636m in May 2011 to $19,241m in June 2011. Intermediate and other merchandise goods rose $322m (4%) with the fuels and lubricants component up $333m (11%). Capital goods rose $296m (7%) with the capital goods n.e.s. component up $304m (57%). Non-monetary gold rose $22m (6%) while consumption goods fell $34m (1%).
IMPACT OF NATURAL DISASTERS
Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami
- The Japanese earthquake and tsunami occurred on 11 March 2011. On a month to month basis, original series can be impacted by a number of factors including commodity prices, exchange rates, supply constraints, consumer confidence and unusual influences. It is not usually possible to quantify the impact of a specific event, like the Japanese earthquake and tsunami on the import series. The impact of these events will be closely monitored by the ABS.
- Between May and June 2011 merchandise imports from Japan rose $425m (39%) following a rise of $313m (40%) between April and May 2011. The non-industrial transport equipment component rose $190m between April and May 2011 and rose a further $246m (80%) between May and June 2011. The fuels and lubricants component was up $71m (47%) between May and June 2011.
