A MESSAGE FROM LIVING CONDITIONS

Welcome to the December 2010 edition of Age Matters, your source of information about statistics on older people. The coming year promises to be a busy year for the Living Conditions section with the release of data from three age related surveys, as well as continuing our pursuit of providing policy makers and the wider research community with relevant and timely age related data.

Several major ABS household surveys are approaching important milestones. The preliminary results from the 2009 Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers is due out in December with further data due for release in the first half of 2011. In the last newsletter we mentioned that the 2009-10 Household Expenditure Survey (HES) and Survey of Income and Housing (SIH) were in the field. Enumeration of these surveys is completed and the results are expected to become available from late 2011. The enumeration of the 2010 General Social Survey (GSS) is nearing completion, with results also expected to be available from late 2011. We look forward to bringing you rich and diverse information on the lives of older people throughout 2011.

As flagged in our June Newsletter, the second NatStats conference NatStats 2010, was held in Sydney over September 15th-17th. The conference theme was "Measuring what counts: economic development, well-being and progress in 21st century Australia" with the focus being on the value of statistics in helping Australia face future challenges. A set of Conference Recommendations were drafted during the conference and the finalised version was released on the 19 October 2010.

In case you were not aware, every ABS household survey (including the ones above) collects basic demographic information from respondents, including age. This allows us to draw out a vast array of information on older people. This edition of Age Matters contains several articles and analyses from recent ABS publications, covering migration, wage and salary earners, health experiences, and the Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index.

If you have any queries relating to the information in this newsletter, please contact Steve Gelsi on (03) 9615 7590 or at <steve.gelsi@abs.gov.au>.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Age Matters.

Seasons greetings and best wishes for 2011
