WHOLESALE SALES OF COMMODITIES


During 2005-06 the combined retail and wholesale industries generated total wholesale sales of $344.9b, with cost of goods sold of $274.9b, and a margin on sales of 20.3%.

Transport equipment (including new motor vehicles) was the largest contributor generating 15.8% ($54.5b) of total wholesale sales. Food (including Meat and dairy products and Other food products) contributed 13.1% ($45.1b), while Electronic and electrical equipment accounted for 11.8% ($40.8b) of total wholesale sales.

Clothing and footwear was a high margin commodity group with 37% on sales of wholesale goods, while Photographic and scientific equipment reported margins of 32.3%. In contrast, the low margin categories were Petroleum, gas and coal with 9.9% on wholesale sales of goods, while Agriculture and farm produce recorded margins of 12.8%.
