CANCER (C00-D48)

Cancers were the underlying cause of 43,216 doctor certified deaths in 2011, an increase of 497 doctor certified deaths from 2010.

The following diseases accounted for half (51.3% or 22,160) of all doctor certified cancer deaths:

  • Trachea and lung cancer (C33-C34) , increased by 0.4% from 7,989 in 2010 to 8,022 in 2011
  • Colon and rectum cancer (C18-C21), increased by 1.0 % from 3,988 in 2010 to 4,026 in 2011.
  • Blood and lymph cancer (including leukaemia) (C81-C96), increased by 0.9% from 3,881 in 2010 to 3,917 in 2011
  • Prostate cancer (C61), increased by 2.2% from 3,213 in 2010 to 3,283 in 2011
  • Breast cancer (C50), increased by 2.9% from 2,830 in 2010 to 2,912 in 2011.

Of these deaths due to cancer certified by a doctor, 24,439 deaths were male and 18,777 were female. Median age at death for all doctor certified deaths attributed to cancer was 75.4 years, which has remained stable since 2010.
