EMPLOYEES AND HOURS WORKED BY INDUSTRY

  • In the August quarter 2009, the average number of hours worked by employees (original) in Western Australia was highest in Mining, followed by Agriculture, forestry and fishing. Both industries recorded averages above 40 hours per week despite decreases since the previous quarter of 4 hours and 3 hours respectively. In contrast, Accommodation and food services, Health Care and social assistance, Retail trade and Arts and recreation services recorded averages below 30 hours per week.
  • Overall, the average weekly number of hours worked by employees decreased by 1 hour to 33.5 hours in the August quarter 2009. Construction and Mining had the largest quarterly decrease (both down 4 hours) while Information media and telecommunications (up 5.1 hours) and Transport, postal and warehousing (up 2.9 hours) had the largest increases.
