This article provides a brief overview of the prevalence of tobacco smoking and the morbidity and mortality attributed to smoking. Information about the health status and demographic characteristics of smokers, plus the health system costs associated with smoking, are included. This article primarily uses data from the 2007-08 ABS National Health Survey (NHS) as well as previous National Health Surveys from 2001 and 2004-05. Estimates of deaths attributable to smoking which use ABS Causes of Death data are included.
