This publication provides a compilation and analysis of the mortality experiences of the population by age, sex and selected causes of death for Australia, the States and Territories during 1971-92, and for the Statistical Divisions and Subdivisions during 1991-92. The study utilises death statistics from vital registrations, which are grouped into eleven leading causes of death currently prevalent in Australia. Mortality rates are calculated by sex, age, and causes of death, which are summarised by several other measures of mortality. The study is unique in three respects: (i) it provides time series mortality rates between 1971 and 1992 for Australia, the States and Territories; (ii) the spatial variation mortality is examined for Australia entirely; and (iii) the comparison of regional mortality with Australia or State mortality is based on the standardised measures and using the statistical test of significance.
