Age
Overall, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners were younger than non-Indigenous prisoners, which follows the same profile from previous years.
At 30 June 2017:
- The median age of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners was 32 years, whilst for non-Indigenous prisoners it was 36 years. (Table 1)
- Prisoners aged 40 years or more accounted for 23% (2,604 prisoners) of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoner population, compared with 37% (10,927 prisoners) of the non-Indigenous prisoner population. (Table 21)
