Purpose
To monitor the structure and performance of the retail and services industries in Australia.

Description
Data for the 1991-92 survey were based on a mail questionnaire sent to 29,000 in-scope retail businesses in Australia.

Data Detail
For industry data:

Number of businesses/management units;

Persons employed;

Wages and salaries;

Turnover;

Cost of goods sold;

Industry gross product;

Total assets;

Total liabilities;

Income, expenditure and profit by ANZSIC group; and

Performance measures (e.g. liquidity ratio) by ANZSIC class.

For commodity data:

Components of turnover (e.g. retail sales, service income); and

Commodity sales and other revenue by ANZSIC class.

In relation to transport, data are available for motor vehicle retailing and motor vehicle services.

Frequency of Data Availability
Data release is irregular-approximately every six years. The 1991-92 survey data were released in 1994. The data for 1998-99 survey are expected to be released in June 2000.

The survey was first conducted in 1991-92.
