At 30 June 2004, the Victorian milk cattle herd stood at 1.9 million, with the highest numbers in the Western District and Goulburn Statistical Divisions.

At 30 June 2004, most milk cattle in Victoria were found in the Western District Statistical Division (453,700). This was followed by the Goulburn Statistical Division with 424,500 and the Gippsland Statistical Division with 400,500.
