Meat cattle are found in all parts of Tasmania; the highest concentrations are in the north-west (King Island and Circular Head) and in the north-east (Dorset municipality). Smaller herds are found throughout the Central Highlands and Northern Midlands municipalities. Tasmania almost exclusively produces grass-fed beef for domestic and international markets.

Tasmania's meat cattle herd increased slightly in the year ending 30 June 2004 to be at 495,500.
