Despite the loss of some export markets in Europe and Asia in recent years, onions in Tasmania are still mainly grown for export. Most onions are grown on the fertile soils in the north-west and almost all the rest are grown around Scottsdale in the north-east.

Tasmania produces over one fifth of Australia's total onion crop with production only behind that of South Australia. In 2003-04, Tasmanian farmers produced 64,700 tonnes of onions.

In 2003-04, 70% of all onions produced in Tasmania came from the Mersey-Lyell Statistical Division (45,000 tonnes).
