ABANDONED INNOVATIVE ACTIVITY
During the year ended 30 June 2010, 7% of Australian businesses abandoned at least one innovative activity. Businesses with 0-4 persons employed reported the lowest proportion of abandoned innovative activity during 2009-10 (6%). The three remaining employment size ranges all recorded abandoned innovative activity at 8% or above. New marketing methods was the most commonly reported type of innovative activity which was abandoned during the year ended 30 June 2010 (4%). This was followed by new goods or services (3%). By industry, the highest proportion of abandoned innovative activity was reported by businesses in Wholesale trade (12%), while the lowest was Transport, postal and warehousing (2%). The highest proportion of businesses that reported having abandoned the development or introduction of goods and services during 2009-10 was in the Wholesale trade industry (7%). Businesses in Manufacturing were the most likely to report having abandoned marketing methods (6%). Businesses in the Financial and insurance services industry were the most likely to report having abandoned operational processes and organisational/managerial processes (both 5%).
