MILK CATTLE The total number of milk cattle in Australia in 2011 was 2.6 million head, only 200 thousand head above the historical low of 2.4 million set in 1991. No state registered a major decrease or increase to the previous year. Across most Australian states a similar pattern of change can be seen with the exception of Victoria and Tasmania. In Victoria, total milk cattle numbers peaked at 2 million in 2001 with the lowest number recorded in 1992 at 1.4 million. In Tasmania, total milk cattle numbers peaked at 247 thousand head in 1967 with the lowest number recorded in 1990 at 134 thousand head.
