1. This document contains a complete copy of the Australian Harmonized Export Commodity Classification (AHECC) (Cat. no. 1233.0). The structure and format of this electronic version is similar to the paper version issued to subscribers on 13 December 2001 and updated on 18 June 2002. Future issues of replacement pages and new editions will be released electronically from this site.

2. The web version of the AHECC below is designed to be used as an on-line resource that can be used independently or in conjunction with the paper version of the publication.

3. It contains six sections:

Introduction and Explanatory NotesProviding background information on the AHECC; classification advice; instructions for completing an export entry; confidentiality information; information about how changes to the AHECC can be made; details of the availability of trade statistics; and, contact officers for inquiries.

Summary of Classification, Codes and AbbreviationsLists the codes and abbreviations used in conjunction with the AHECC.


Key of ChangesContains a list of codes that have been opened, closed or otherwise changed since the classification introduction in 1988.

Index of CommoditiesAlphabetic index of commodities at the 4, 5 or 6 digit level of the AHECC. Queries on classification issues should be directed to Australian Customs Service contacts on Contacts page.

Detailed Export Commodity ClassificationThis part contains the entire 8-digit classification. It is presented by Section and under each section the Chapters are shown.

This contains a copy of all of the above documents in Acrobat format, for down-loading and printing.


4. To navigate the AHECC you need to "drill down" to the relevant document. This can be done in one of two ways.
    (i) Either open the top level document and click on links within; or
    (ii) click on the "twisties" (the triangles) next to documents to show a list of the documents under it. Once you are find the required document enter it by clicking on it.
Note that some documents have up to three levels (eg. under Detailed Export Commodity Classification are Sections, and under these are Chapters).

5. The web version can be searched using the standard ABS web searcher. If you use an "Advanced" search using two search strings and include "AHECC" as one of these strings, and use the "limit search to these categories" to "AusStats" you will limit the search to only the AHECC. If you do not include "AHECC" in your search, you will find references to your search string that are located anywhere on the ABS website.
