The ABS publishes information on deaths and causes of death collected by state and territory Registrars of Births, Deaths, and Marriages. For Tasmania, these measures show that:

  • The number of deaths registered in 2005 was 3,867, a decrease of 25 on the 2004 figure of 3,892.
  • Over the time period 2001 to 2005, the crude death rate remained steady at around 8 per 1,000 population.
  • Over the same time period, the standardised death rate fell from 7.6 to 6.9 per 1,000 population.
  • In 2005 the infant mortality rate for Tasmania was 3.5, a decrease from the 2004 figure (3.6).
