The ABS is led by the Australian Statistician – a statutory office established in the Australian Bureau of Statistics Act 1975.
The operations of the ABS are divided into four groups: Population, Labour and Social Statistics Group; Economic and Environment Statistics Group; ABS 2017 Group; and the Strategies, Services and Technology Group. The Methodology and Data Management Division reports directly to the Australian Statistician.
