Use ABS Data to Determine Your Business Location
An overseas company contacted the ABS to help identify the best sites to establish a chain of stores in Australia. A suitable site required the following characteristics to be met within a four kilometre radius:
- a population of at least 50,000;
- less than 50% of dwellings being purchased;
- average income greater than $600 per week;and
- at least 35,000 people employed in the business locations within this radius.
The consultancy involved testing every Census Collection District in Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide to see how many of the four criteria were met within a four kilometre radius of that District.
The client received a list of these Districts, and a supplementary list of Districts meeting three of the four criteria. Detailed maps were also provided showing which Districts met all the specified criteria.
With this information the client could base its decisions on the latest available statistical data. The data has given the chain stores a greater chance of success in an extremely competitive market.
Business Register Data
An overseas company wants to set up a business in an Australian capital city. They request a consultancy to determine the number of businesses in their interested field in each capital city. They use this information to help with their decision-making.
International Trade Data
An overseas company is considering exporting footwear to Australia. In order to determine if there is an opportunity, the company requests the number of sports shoes imported into Australia from all countries. They use this information to help with their decision-making
