How to Apply for the ABS Graduate Development Program

Applications for ABS vacancies are lodged through the ABS eRecruitment system. The electronic application process consists of three simple stages: registration, drafting your application and review. The system will guide you through each of these stages.

When submitting your application, please be sure that you respond to all the mandatory questions, complete your responses to the selection criteria and upload a copy of your resume and your most recent academic transcript.

Steps in the Selection Process

The Selection Process consists of six clear stages which are outlined below:

    Stage 1 - Eligibility
Before you commence your online application, ensure you satisfy the eligibility requirements outlined below.

To be eligible for our program:
    • you must be an Australian Citizen or be granted Australian Citizenship prior to the program commencing in February 2016
    • maintained grades of a credit average especially in your final year of university study
    • have or will have completed an undergraduate degree by 31 January 2016
    • have completed your undergraduate degree no earlier than 1 January 2011

Stage 2 - Online Application Form

The online application form provides you with the opportunity to outline your current capabilities and qualifications that you will bring to the ABS.

You will be asked to provide the following information:
    • Contact details
    • Location preference
    • Stream preference
    • Most recent qualification information (including uploading current transcript)
    • Ten multiple choice research questions
    • Two written answer questions.

    Stage 3 - Shortlisting

Initial short-listing will involve assessment of your application including your responses to the selection criteria and the research questions, your academic record and your resume.

    Stage 4 - Video Interviews
If you are successful at stage 2 you will be invited to participate in an online self-recorded video interview.

    Stage 5 - Panel Interview

If you are successful at stage 4 you will be asked to participate in a one on one interview at your closest ABS office.

Please note alternative arrangements may be made if you cannot attend in person (this may include a teleconference).

Stage 6 - Offer of Employment
If you are successful in the selection process, you will receive a formal letter of offer from our Recruitment team.

Please note, other than your written application and interview, considerations that may form part of your assessment and possible placement to specific graduate roles may include your professional qualifications, skills and experience, the needs of the ABS, the expectations and duties of the classification and position, any preferences you indicate and your willingness/capacity to relocate to where the position is available. This is so the ABS can place successful graduates to various locations around Australia requiring certain qualifications and skill sets, and provide you with the best opportunity to grow your ABS career.
