Rationale

Module 1 - Producing data
  • concepts of data, sample, population, and variable
  • apply these understandings to examine data critically
  • principles of good design for observational and experimental studies
  • bias and how it affects data.

Module 2 - Describing, Clarifying and Presenting Data
  • principles of measurement of variables
  • data presentation using sample statistics
  • principles of excellence and integrity in tables and graphs
  • strengths or weaknesses of specific tables and graphs
  • evaluate graphical and tabular presentations critically

Module 3 - Interpreting data
  • interpret data in tables and graphs
  • quality of data
  • role of hypothesis development in deciding whether or not an effect is present in a population
  • concepts of association and causation
  • assess the production, representation and interpretation of data.
