 v. Using samples

From a sample you can generate what we call a statistic, i.e. a measurement on the sample. A sample can tell us something about a population.


Figure 2 - The relationship between sample, population and statistics

A statistic, such as the mean or the standard deviation for the sample, allows us to make inferences about the mean or standard deviation for the population.
