4.5 How important is hypothesis testing in the production of data?

Although it is possible to propose null and alternative hypotheses for a range of studies not all studies are conducted this way.

A test of significance is a statistical method of comparing null and alternative hypotheses, but not all studies are framed in terms of null and alternative hypothesis, as the following sections will show.
