An Introduction to Products Available At Smaller Geographic Locations
Statistics for various types of small regions are available for many standard data sets from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Using this guide you can locate regional and local data by Topic or by Location type.
Small area data can be found in two different types of products
1. Snapshots or profiles for an area that bring together a range of data e.g. Census data, the National Regional Profiles or State/Territory specific publications.
2. Single topic data e.g. Building Approvals or Births.
Where other data are not available on our website at the level of detail you require our Information Consultancy Service may be able to provide you with customised data to meet your specific requirements.
Not all ABS data is available for small areas, usually because it has been collected by a sample survey. If you can’t find what you want on the ABS website contact the National Information & Referral Service (NIRS) on 1300 135 070 to find out whether data is available for your area of interest. NIRS will advise on the availability of the data you are looking for and if necessary forward your request to the Information Consultancy Service for a quote.
Note: While the following tables list an extensive range of products and locations space precludes every table covering every location for every product. Subsequent releases of a product may include or exclude locations. You are advised to check each table, the product and related products to see if statistics by other locations may be available.

Products by Location
The ABS uses a variety of structures for collecting and disseminating geographically classified statistics. Only selected data are available at areas smaller than Australia or State and Territory. A range of products available at these smaller areas are listed below. To find out more about the geographic areas used by the ABS see the Geography Classifications under Statistics by Topic from the Statistics page on the ABS website. Definitions for other locations can be found in information about the data, for example in the Explanatory Notes.

Other Locations
Capital City
The capital cities in each of the eight states and territories are currently defined by a single Statistical Division (SD) e.g. Sydney Statistical Division. To find out more about how statistical divisions are defined see the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (cat. no. 1216.0).
