What do I need to access the form?

To access the form, you need a Unit Identifier and a Passcode.

The Unit Identifier and the Passcode can be found on the letter sent to you by the ABS.

The form is designed to work successfully with the most commonly used Internet browsers, providing they support 128-bit SSL encryption. If your browser does not support 128-bit encryption you will not be able to complete the form online. For information on how to enable 128-bit encryption click on the link to Technical Help.

How long does the form take to complete?

The time taken to complete the online form will depend on how many questions are relevant, the speed of your computer and Internet connection, as well as the level of Internet traffic.

If you are unable to complete the form in one session, you can save the information you have entered, exit and return to compete the form at a more convenient time. For further information, please refer to How do I resume completing the form at a later time?

How secure is the form?

The ABS is bound by the Census and Statistics Act 1905 to protect the confidentiality of the information you provide to the ABS. To ensure that your information is delivered to the ABS securely, we have used the strongest encryption technology that your browser will support. This means that the information you send is not able to be read by anyone but the ABS. All possible measures to protect the integrity of the form have been taken.

The security of your information also relies upon the confidentiality of your Passcode. You must ensure that your Passcode is stored in a secure manner to prevent others from using the number to access your information. Once the form has been submitted, it cannot be retrieved from the system.

How do I complete the form?

On every page within the form, there are links to online help and information which will assist you in completing the form.

For users of screen readers, click on the ‘Start Accessible Version’ link before the ‘Start survey form’ button.

At the ‘Login’ page, in the spaces provided, enter your Unit Identifier followed by your Passcode. Your Unit Identifier and Passcode can be found on the letter sent to you by the ABS.

For the vision impaired, if you would like to receive your Unit Identifier and Passcode in an accessible format, please click on the Contact Us link for ABS survey phone numbers and a customer service representative will assist you.

Press the 'Login' button and follow the steps below:

Step 1: Upon successful login, you will be presented with the first question. Please answer all the relevant questions and by pressing the ‘Next’ button will advance you through the form.

Step 2: As you complete each section of the form a will appear next to the corresponding link in the left hand navigation menu. Any section without a green tick means that this section is not complete.

Step 3: Once all sections are showing green ticks, you will progress to the 'Submit’ page. Press the 'Submit your form’ button to submit the form.

Step 4: On successful submission, you will be presented with the ‘Thank you’ page. Record your Receipt Number for future reference in a safe place or press the ‘Display printable summary’ button to print your Receipt Number and a summary of your responses. The ABS may request this number as confirmation that you have completed the survey. To leave the online form, press the ‘Exit’ button.

Step 5: To protect the privacy of your information, the ABS strongly recommends that you close the browser window after you have exited the online form.

I'm getting a login error message, what can I do?

These messages relate to the numbers you are using to login to the online form. Please check that the Unit Identifier and Passcode you are entering are the same as those you have been provided with.

If you continue to receive these messages, please click on the Contact Us link for ABS survey phone numbers and a customer service representative will assist you. Please quote the error message number to the customer service representative.

What if cannot complete the form in one session?

The form is resumeable. If you are unable to complete the form in one session, you can save the information you have entered, exit and return to complete the form at a more convenient time. To do this, click the 'Exit (save) your form’ link, which appears at the bottom of the left hand navigation menu. You will be prompted to save the form before exiting.

Why have I skipped questions?

Each question should be completed in the order in which it appears in the form. The form has been designed to skip questions that are not relevant based on your response to previous questions. Sequencing in the form has been designed to make completing the form quicker and easier.

What happens if my Internet connection drops out?

If your Internet connection drops out while you are completing the form, try to reconnect immediately. Please DO NOT close the browser.

On successfully reconnection, depending on the time taken to reconnect, you should return to the form with no loss of entered information. If reconnection took some time, your session may have timed out. For information on the time out function, please refer to The form has timed out?

If the browser closed, your session will have ended and the information entered after the last save point will be lost. For information on the save function, please refer to Does the form save?

Please log back in to complete and submit the form.

The form has timed out?

If you do not interact with the form for 30 minutes, your session will time out. All information entered will be automatically saved when your session times out, unless you are using the accessible version of the online form. If you are using the accessible version of the online form, the information entered after the last save point will be lost. For information on the save function, please refer to Does the form save?

If your session has timed out, please log back in to complete and submit the form. For information on the resume function, please refer to How do I resume completing the form at a later time?

Does the form save?

The form saves in two (2) ways: Auto-save and manual save. Auto-saves are performed after the completion of each section. The auto-save will safely store all information you have entered. Auto-saves are also performed when your session times out, unless you are using the accessible version of the online form where the information entered after the last save will be lost.

You can manually save the form by clicking the ‘Exit (save) your form' link which appears at the bottom of the left hand navigation menu. You will be asked to save the form before exiting. Press 'Yes' to save the information you have entered and exit the form.

How do I resume completing the form at a later time?

If you are unable to complete the form in one session you can exit, save your information and return to complete the form at a more convenient time. You can exit the form at any time by clicking the ‘Exit (save) your form' link, which appears at the bottom of the left hand navigation menu. You will be prompted to save the form before exiting.

To return to your saved form, from the ‘Welcome’ page press 'Start survey' button. At the 'Login' page enter the Unit Identifier and the Passcode used to first login to start the form. On successful login, from the left hand navigation menu, select the section you wish to complete.

Can I make changes to a section once it has been marked as 'complete'?

Yes. Changes can be made to any section of the form that is marked as 'complete', showing a green tick in the left hand navigation menu. From the left hand navigation menu, select the section you would like to edit.

Once you submit the form, for security reasons the form is locked and can no longer be retrieved by anyone except the ABS.

How do I submit the form?

To successfully submit the form, all sections must have a status of ’complete’, showing a green tick against each section in the left hand navigation menu. To submit the form, you must complete each section.

Any section without a green tick means that this section is not complete. From the left hand navigation menu, select the section not showing a green tick and complete all the relevant questions. When all the relevant questions have been answered, on pressing of the last 'Next' button will generate the green tick against that section in the left hand navigation menu.

Once all sections are showing green ticks, click the 'Submit your form' link, which is located at the bottom of the left hand navigation menu, and from the submit page, press the 'Submit' button.

Can I print a copy of the form?

Yes. After you press the 'Submit form' button, you will be presented with the 'Thank you' page. On this page is the option to print the Receipt Number and a summary of your responses.

Can I complete a paper form?

It is important that the Unit Identifier provided to you is used to login and complete the form.

What if I lose the Passcode?

The security of your information relies upon the confidentiality of your Passcode. Ensure that once used, your Passcode is stored in a secure manner to prevent others from using your Passcode to access your information.
