DataPacks

DataPacks is suitable for experienced Census data users who have their own database or analysis systems. They contain data for all Census geographies from Australia down to Statistical Area Level 1.

There is a total of five DataPacks, based on Community Profiles with two additional profiles:

  • General Community
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People
  • Time Series
  • Place of Enumeration (additional)
  • Working Population (additional, available late 2017).

^ Separate Estimated Resident Population DataPacks will be produced once 2016 Estimated Resident Population data becomes available.

Details on Place of Enumeration and Working Population Profiles can be found in Census of Population and Housing - Products and Services, 2016 (cat no. 2011.0.55.001)

The data items in DataPacks are contained in CSV files which can be imported into existing systems and are ready for immediate manipulation or merging with digital boundaries.

For more detail on which geographies will be available, view the DataPacks geography table.

To view the data for a single geographic area in table format, use Community Profiles.

Note: Average number of persons per bedroom: There has been change in methodology used to calculate the average number of persons per bedroom. In the 2016 DataPacks Time Series Profile, the 2011 average number of persons per bedroom data uses the updated methodology, but this is not currently reflected in the Community Profiles.

The 2016 Sequential Template contained in the DataPack Time Series Profile has been updated on 19 July 2017. We recommend that users who downloaded the template prior, update to the most recent version.

Changes to DataPacks

For the 2016 data release, DataPacks is an entirely online product. There will no longer be an option to purchase DVDs. DataPacks will be a free-of-charge download from the ABS website.

DataPacks registration removed to allow for easier access to data.

The 2016 Time Series Profile uses an approximate area based geographic allocation of 2006 Collector Districts to 2016 Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) output areas. For the 2011 Time Series Profile, this approximation was made on a population distribution basis. For consistency, an update to the 2006 data in the 2016 Time Series Profiles will be released in August with the 2006 Collector District allocation made on a population distribution basis.

Technical changes:

  • With the introduction of the new General Community Profile, the Basic Community Profile (BCP) and Expanded Community Profile (XCP) (produced in 2011) have been replaced.
  • 2016 DataPacks will be supplied with short column descriptor labels. For 2011, you can still choose short, long or sequential labels.
  • Labelling now reflects actual region identification.
