New insight into regional NSW

Looking for the latest information on the people and economy of regional NSW? Your search will be over when you get your hands on a copy of Regional Statistics NSW 2001, released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Drawn from a range of ABS sources, this publication provides the latest figures on population, births and deaths, labour force, educational attainment, crime, child care, local council data, businesses, building, hotels and motels. This issue also features data on household expenditure and safety in the home.

The publication includes some data down to Local Government level such as the selection of details below.
  • In 1999, Gosford City had the greatest number of people aged 65 and over (26,900), closely followed by Lake Macquarie City (26,500).
  • In June 2000, Sydney City had the greatest number of hotels and motels with facilities -72 establishments. This was followed by the Snowy River Council Area, with 49 establishments.
  • There were 88 births and 34 deaths in the Cobar Council Area during 1999.
  • The Outer Western Sydney and Blacktown region had the highest victimisation rate of household crime, with 13.6 percent, while the highest victimisation rate of personal crime (6.5 percent) was recorded in Canterbury-Bankstown.
  • On average, people living in Northern Beaches households spent the most on medical care and expenses ($62.85) each week, compared to the state average of $33.81 during 1998-99.
  • With 2,354 residents, Central Darling is geographically the largest Council Area, covering 51,395.12 square kilometres, compared to the smallest, Hunter's Hill, at 5.73 square kilometres, which has a population of 13,856 people.
  • In the Sydney Statistical Division (SD), Bankstown City had the most manufacturing locations with 946; while in the Central West (SD), the area with the greatest number of manufacturing locations (85) was Orange City.
  • More children living in the Northern Beaches SSD received both formal and informal childcare (16.3 percent), compared to 5.7 percent of children living in the Illawarra and South Eastern SDs.
