Trend continues to rise for new motor vehicle sales during September: ABS

The trend estimate of total new motor vehicle sales increased by 1.0% in September compared with August 2002. It now exceeds the previous high point recorded in July 1998. Passenger vehicle sales increased by 0.5% and other vehicle sales increased by 1.9%.

Over the twelve months to September 2002, sales of total new motor vehicles increased by 8.4%, passenger vehicles increased by 3.3%, while other vehicles increased by 18.9%. The only state or territory to record a fall in the trend estimate for total new motor vehicle sales was the Northern Territory (1.1%) while Queensland recorded the largest increase (19.6%).

The seasonally adjusted estimate of total new motor vehicle sales increased by 0.6% in September compared with August 2002. Increases were recorded in Victoria (5.1%), South Australia (5.3%) and the Australian Capital Territory (9.1%). Passenger vehicle sales increased by 1.5% while other vehicle sales fell by 1.0%.
