Large grain crops - Highlight of the 2001-2002 season

Cereal grain crop production was at or near record levels during the year prior to the drought according to preliminary 2001-2002 Agricultural Survey estimates released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Wheat production increased over the previous year by 12% to 24.9 million tonnes. The rise was largely due to increased production in Western Australia (up 36%) and South Australia (up 18%).

Barley production increased by 25% to 8.4 million tonnes. There were increased plantings and production in all major barley growing states.

The production of oats for grain increased by 37% to 1.4 million tonnes, with particularly large increases in New South Wales (up 35%), South Australia (up 46%) and Western Australia (up 79%).

Livestock

Livestock numbers reduced over the year to 30 June 2002, with the exception of pig numbers which continued to increase.

Milk cattle numbers decreased by 4% to 3.1 million with decreases recorded in all states.

The meat cattle herd fell by 1.4% to 24.2 million head. Decreases in New South Wales (down 4.0%), Queensland (down 2.0%) and the Northern Territory (down 3.9%) were partially offset by increases in Victoria (up 3.6%), South Australia (up 5.8%) and Western Australia (up 1.8%).

The sheep and lamb flock decreased 2% to 108.6 million at 30 June 2002. The flock has decreased by 24 million (from 132.6 million) since 1993-94.

Pig numbers increased by 5% to 2.9 million head. There were large increases in Victoria (up 18%) and Western Australia (up 25%), partially offset by decreases in South Australia (down 7%) and New South Wales (down 3%).

(Note that these estimates relate to the year ended 30 June 2002, prior to the impact of the drought which now affects most areas of Australia).
