Purpose
To provide statistics on Australia's international investment activity.

Description
This survey collects information about investment activity into and out of Australia. It measures:

  • the levels (stock) of foreign financial assets and foreign liabilities of residents;
  • capital transactions (investment flows) resulting in increases and decreases in the levels of these assets and liabilities;
  • other changes in the levels of these assets and liabilities; and
  • income accrued on these assets and liabilities.

Data are collected by mail questionnaire sent to about 900 enterprise groups which have significant international investment activity. The information from this survey serves as input to the quarterly publication Balance of Payments and International Investment Position, Australia (cat. no. 5302.0).

Data Detail
  • Foreign assets by direction and type of investment;
  • Foreign liabilities by direction and type of investment;
  • Australian investment abroad-levels of investment, investment flows and associated income; and
  • Foreign investment in Australia-levels of investment, investment flows and associated income.

Detailed data on the transport industry are not published but are available on request.

Australia.

Frequency of Data Availability
Data are released quarterly.

Historical Data
The first publication devoted specifically to foreign investment statistics was released in 1954-55. Since September quarter 1997, data from the survey are included in Balance of Payments and International Investment Position (cat. no. 5302.0).
