INTRODUCTION

1. 'Sources of cash income' is one of the three cash income variables. It is collected at a broad level in the Short question module, at a narrower level in the Basic question module and in detail in the Full question module used in the Household Expenditure Survey (HES) and the Survey of Income and Housing Costs (SIHC) to indicate the range of sources from which persons, income units, families and households derive their cash income.

2. 'Sources of cash income' is the variable that classifies persons, income units, families and households according to the sources from which the unit receives cash income.

3. This document is intended to be read in conjunction with the 'Framework for standard cash income variables' which provides conceptual background, the Standard classification of sources of cash income, the question modules used to collect cash income data and definitions of all relevant terminology.
