There were an estimated 3,866 farms in Tasmania at 30 June 2004. This follows the national trend of decreasing numbers as some farmers leave the industry.

The Statistical Division which recorded the highest number of farms in Tasmania at 30 June 2004 was the Mersey-Lyell Statistical Division (1,452) which accounted for 38% of farms in the state.
