FEBRUARY KEY POINTS


SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS
  • Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during February 2010 (485,800 movements) increased little compared with January 2010 (485,300 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.6% for December 2009 and 0.4% for January 2010.
  • Currently, trend estimates for arrivals are 4.0% higher than in February 2009.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During February 2010, arrivals (486,700 movements) recorded an increase of 1.1% compared with January 2010 (481,600 movements). This followed a monthly increase of 2.4% for December 2009 and a monthly decrease of 0.9% for January 2010.
  • Original estimates: There were 558,300 arrivals to Australia in February 2010.


SHORT-TERM RESIDENT DEPARTURES
  • Trend estimates: Short-term resident departures from Australia during February 2010 (554,400 movements) increased 0.2% compared with January 2010 (553,600 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.4% for December 2009 and 0.3% for January 2010.
  • Currently, trend estimates for departures are 17.7% higher than in February 2009. Note that trend breaks were introduced from April 2009 - see Explanatory Notes, paragraph 25.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During February 2010, departures (552,700 movements) decreased by 0.4% compared with January 2010 (555,200 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 2.8% for December 2009 and a monthly increase of 1.2% for January 2010.
  • Original estimates: There were 416,800 departures from Australia during February 2010.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Re-introduction of Short-term Resident Departures trend estimates - The trend estimates have been re-introduced for all Short-term Resident Departures (STRD) series. Unusual influences associated with the Global Financial Crisis were affecting the STRD series, but these effects can now be estimated with a sufficient level of accuracy. However, caution should still be used when interpreting the recent STRD trend estimates as they may still be affected further by unusual economic factors. For further details, please see Explanatory Notes, paragraph 25.
