SUMMARY OF OPERATIONS

At the end of June 2007, there were 102 not-for-profit hospitals in Australia. These organisations employed 55,652 people at the end of June 2007. Permanent part-time employees accounted for 42.4% (23,609 people) of total employment, permanent full-time employees 37.1% (20,673 people) and casuals 20.4% (11,370 people).

In addition to paid employees, there were 6,557 volunteers during the 2006-07 financial year.

Industry value added by these organisations was $3.1b.

SOURCES OF INCOME

During the 2006-07 financial year, not-for-profit hospitals received $5.3b in income.

The graph below shows that the main source of income for these organisations was income from services, which accounted for 67.3% ($3.6b) of total income.

Funding from federal, state and local government accounted for just over a quarter of total income (27.1% or $1.5b).

EXPENSES

During the 2006-07 financial year, not-for-profit hospitals incurred $5.2b in expenses.

The graph below shows that the main expense item for these organisations was labour costs, which accounted for 54.1% ($2.8b) of total expenses.

Purchases accounted for 21.6% ($1.1b) of total expenses and depreciation and amortisation 4% ($0.2b).
