In 2009-10, the Gross Value of Irrigated Agricultural Production (GVIAP) constituted 29% of the total Gross Value of Agricultural Production (GVAP) for Australia. Proportionately the three highest commodities in Australia were rice (with 100% of GVAP being irrigated), grapes (with 96% of GVAP being irrigated), and cotton (with 88% of cotton value being irrigated).
In the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) region the GVIAP totalled 30% of GVAP. Similarly to the Australian totals, the three commodities with the highest percentages of GVAP were rice (100%), grapes (96%), and cotton (88%).
In the states and territories, rice was the commodity with the highest proportion of irrigated GVAP, with New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland irrigating 100% of the rice crop. Grapes was the highest in South Australia (98%), Western Australia (97%) and Tasmania (95%). Both the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory recorded nursery production as the commodity with the highest proportion of irrigated GVAP, with the Australian Capital Territory irrigating 100% of production, and the Northern Territory 92%.
